What is AmeriCorps*VISTA?
AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program. Members serve one year working full-time at a nonprofit organization. VISTAs fight poverty by building capacity and sustainability for projects in their community. AmeriCorps*VISTA members receive a living allowance of $936/month, health coverage, and can qualify for a $5,550 education award at the end of their service. What job would I do?
Help veterans and military families get the help they deserve! Impact vet and military families by developing activities that provide, support, and/or facilitate access to services and benefits. Programs particularly address job training, educational opportunities, safe and affordable housing, health services, and more. Positions to start in February 2012 currently available at:
Pine Tree Legal Assistance (Portland): Strengthen legal services and self-help tools accessible to Maine veterans, military members, and families. Work with the Volunteer Lawyers project to develop new and research funding opportunities to support expanded programming.
Sweetser (Saco): Increase veterans’ and military families’ access to community-based behavioral health services. Develop programming to better serve the unique needs of veterans and their families, and build capacity agency-wide to establish a network of care.
Bread of Life Ministries (Augusta): Organize materials, conduct outreach, and promote home ownership opportunities for veterans, especially disabled veterans, using Cony Village in Augusta as the pilot project. Work closely with local, state, and national organizations to ensure resources and benefits available are maximized.
Tri-County Mental Health Services (Lewiston): Conduct education and outreach to Maine’s female veterans, their families, and their service providers. Coordinate training and education to increase staff skills and awareness for working with veterans and family members.

Do you have strong communication and organizational skills? How about project management experience? Would you like to work within Maine's communities to fight poverty from the ground up? This position offers many opportunities to build skills around community organizing, volunteer management, marketing, training and facilitation, leadership, and more.
